Fishing Report Dec 15,2014

fishing01Fishing was great last week. Caught lots of big slab crappie, some really big blue cats, and also really nice Rockfish. Caught the crappie over brush brush piles. Started fishing a new jig last week, called the Rockport Rattler. They make crappie jigs with an integrated rattle in them. They also have glass eyes, which I think is just as big of an attraction as the rattle. All I know is they really work. Caught three over three pounds in one day! Now those are slabs. Caught several cats over 30 pounds, one of which we released: 38 pounds.

santee-cooper-fishing-3We call them drifting with hearing and gizzard shad, fishing the whole baitfish, with the tail cut off so it would bleed a little bit. The cats came out of 35 to 55 feet of water, mostly on the south eastern end of the lower lake. Caught the catch both drifting and angered. This time of the year I like to find the big catfish on my sonar and then anchor down straight on top of them, fishing vertically. Also, look for the big cats to be suspended this time of year. They're not necessarily always on the bottom when the water is cool. Sometimes you will catch them in 55 feet of water while fishing only 15 feet deep. Especially if the schools of baitfish are up high in the water column. Been catching some really nice rockfish on artificials This time of year I like to throw a big swim bait into schools of menhaden, on the south eastern side of the lake. You can always tell when you are over menhaden because they will make your sonar be blackened out. Throw 7 to 9 inch swim baits and swim them really slow right under the baitfish. Live bait such as gizzard shad and herring work really well for the stripers this time of year too. The weather is supposed to be beautiful all this week, the fishing is going to be spectacular!
